The Craft of Emacs

Zainab Ali

I’ve been an Emacs user for almost a decade, and likely will be for life.

I’ve been programming for a little longer, starting with IntelliJ as an editor and using MS Word for taking notes. Somewhere along the way, I became interested niche programming languages and needed an editor to fit the bill.

Getting started with Emacs was quite a challenge. It took me quite a few years before I saw it as more than a mass of keybindings and arcane config (and perhaps that’s how most people still see it), and as something I program in of itself.

As of now, I like the idea of being able to code my own editor. I’ve since coded editors for all sorts of purposes: new programming languages, cross stitch patterns, or writing this book, for instance.
